Minecraft on a low-end PC or an old laptop
Low-end PC? Still plays.
Minecraft: Java Edition runs on modest hardware when the launcher and the game are set up for it. Give it a sensible amount of memory, not all of it, turn down render distance, and add a few performance mods. doki Client does the launcher half for you.
What does doki do on a budget PC?
Most of it happens without you touching a setting.
- Built in Rust
- The launcher is made with Rust and Tauri, not Electron, so it starts fast and stays light beside the game.
- Lite mode
- Switches off the heavy interface effects on older machines. Auto picks it for you.
- Auto-optimize
- Detects your graphics and picks the memory and JVM profile for the PC it's running on.
- Low-end profile
- Gentle JVM settings made for 4 GB machines and integrated graphics.
- Your real GPU
- On gaming laptops, tells Windows to run the game on the high-performance graphics card.
- Out of the way
- doki can sit in the system tray while you play, so the game gets the PC.
How much RAM should Minecraft get?
Less than most people think. More memory than the game needs doesn't add frames, and it can make the pauses longer.
- 4 GB PC
- Around 2 GB for the game, so Windows and the launcher keep the rest.
- 8 GB PC
- 3 to 4 GB is plenty for Vanilla and a light set of mods.
- Big modpacks
- They want more, and a pack's page usually says how much. doki's slider keeps headroom for the rest of your PC.
Which settings help most?
In Minecraft's own Video Settings. Change one at a time and see what your PC likes.
- Render distance
- The biggest single cost. 6 to 8 chunks is a good start on integrated graphics.
- Graphics: Fast
- Fast instead of Fancy, and smooth lighting off or minimum.
- Particles and clouds
- Particles on Minimal, clouds off or Fast.
- A steady frame cap
- A steady 60 feels better than a rate that jumps around. Cap it, or turn VSync on.
- Skip shaders
- Shader packs are made for dedicated graphics cards. Leave them for the next PC.
Which mods make Minecraft faster?
Make a Fabric instance, then add these from Modrinth inside doki. Their dependencies come along on their own.
- Sodium
- Replaces Minecraft's renderer with a much faster one.
- Lithium
- Speeds up game logic like mob AI and block ticking, without changing how the game plays.
- FerriteCore
- Cuts how much memory the game uses.
- EntityCulling
- Skips drawing mobs and block entities you can't see.
